Why You Should Never Go on the Internet Without a VPN and How You Can Get One

Lets admit it. The Internet today is not as safe as it used to be. Every click we perform is traceable and our browsing data can be collected either by the Service Providers or by people who have access to public networks (hackers). Those data can be the web history, geolocation information, app usage, the connection information and the card details while purchasing online. Data can be then sold to third parties or they can be used by hackers to steal from us.

You may have heard of the VPN, as a tool in the fight for our Internet privacy. But how does a VPN exactly work and what it does to keep our browsing data safe?

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN for short, is a software tool that we can use to create privacy on the web. In olden days, a VPN was usually used by corporate users that they wanted to access their offices remotely and exchange sensitive information in a secure way. Later, the VPN technology became available to regular Internet users too. Today, users from all over the world can access the Internet anonymously, without being tracked and away from spies and other online dangers.

In order to connect to a VPN, authentication is required. Using a username and a password, the user can log in. Then, the VPN connection protocols create a “tunnel” between the user’s device and the VPN server, known as “VPN tunnel”. This connection line is private because it encrypts all your data activity before sending them and then decrypts them at the destination.

How does it work?

When you want to access a website from any device, first you connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and then it connects you to the website. All your traffic data can be viewed by your ISP because they pass through your ISP’s servers. A VPN works as a stop in the middle! The exchanged data between your device and the VPN server pass through the created “tunnel” and those data are encrypted, altering the information in a particular way, as an additional layer of security.

So, if the Internet connection is through a VPN connection, that means that you are connected to the Internet via a server run by a VPN provider. As a result, your ISP knows only that you are connected to a VPN server, but it cannot know which websites you are visiting. In addition, your true IP address is hidden and the address that is visible is the one of the VPN server. Through the encrypted connection that a VPN creates, your data are also safe in public wifi hotspots. As a conclusion to the above, people who have access to user’s online activity like the ISP, the government and hackers are unable to “observe” what the user is doing.

To recap, a VPN connection is incredibly useful to secure your Internet connection in online banking, in wifi hotspots, in online shopping and to secure Internet communication. Also, an important benefit of the VPN technology, is that it can give access to blocked content to certain countries because of their geo location.

I was expecting a more in depth article. Consider your clientele next time and besides it ended with only mentioning one vendor. The end result is an ad. Do this again and you’ll lose a subscriber.
